The WTA Qatar Open starts on 12 February 2019. This year, the tournament is a WTA Premier event, while the WTA Dubai Open will be a Premier 5.
This doesn’t mean that all star tennis players will not be present in Doha. Naomi Osaka announced that she will not take part in this event due to injury, while Petra Kvitova decided not to attend this year.
But we still have a lot of valuable players at the start. First, there’s former World No 1 Simona Halep (currently on #3) as the first seed. In the second round, she might clash with Caroline Garcia or Lesia Tsurenko. Halep won the tournament in 2014.
Second seed is Karolina Pliskova, who also won the event in 2017. In the second round, she might meet fellow Czech player Siniakova.
An interesting fact about the two top seeds is that they already met in the Fed Cup last weekend. Halep won the match in three sets, after two and a half hours of drama. Given the circumstances, we see Halep as the main favourite for the title in 2019, in Doha.
Angelique Kerber is the third seeded player. The German played a final in 2014 and she was defeated by Simona Halep.
Elina Svitolina accepted a wildcard and she will start the tournament as the fourth seed. Svitolina might meet Jelena Ostapenko in the second round, only if the Latvian will overcome Mihaela Buzarnescu. As a side note, Buzarnescu defeated Svitolina twice in 2018.
Time needed: 5 minutes.
