Preview

This edition of the Estoril Open starts with a very strong lineup of players who are all very good on clay courts. First seed Stefanos Tsitsipas started 2019 with a magnificent run at the Australian Open, where he reached the semifinals. The good run continued in February, when he won the title in Marseille and also played the final in Dubai (where he lost to Federer). We were expecting more from the Greek player in the first two Masters of the year, but he showed a slight decline in form. He also lost in the second round in Monte Carlo to Daniil Medvedev, who is now one of the most in-form clay players.
Fabio Fognini, the second seed, made history last week by defeating Rafa Nadal in Monte Carlo and eventually wining the title, which was his first Masters title. Fognini had a pretty bad start of season and he did not play well until the Monaco Masters. However, he now seems to be in top form, which makes him the main favourite for the Estoril trophy.
After being injured for almost two months, Gael Monfils is back on the circuit. The French player was one of the most successful players of this season: he won the Rotterdam Open and reached the semifinals in Sofia and quarterfinals in Indian Wells. Being a very good player on clay, Gael is surely the second favourite of the tournament.
